In reality, the Charles Atlas course used a combination of isotonic and isometric exercises. Unfortunately many so-called "isometric gurus and experts" are still under the false notion that the Atlas course was based solely on isometrics.

If you ever purchased the program like I did then you would know that the course incorporated some unique body weight exercises along with isometrics.

Angelo Siciliano, Charles Atlas’s real name; is still regarded as one of isometrics strongest proponents. Atlas was at one time considered the "World's Most Perfectly Developed Man" a title that he won in 1921 and again in 1922.

Because of his popularity due to winning the title two years in a row, he proceeded to develop his own muscle building training course.

Perhaps you have seen the comic book character "Mac" who is featured at the beach with his girlfriend and subsequently having sand kicked in his face by a much larger and well-developed bully.

Mac then goes out purchases the Charles Atlas training program and quickly develops muscles so that the bully is no longer a problem. He wins the fight and wins the girl back.

So Why Is There so Much Confusion about Charles Atlas Isometrics?

More than likely it is because his training program was called "Dynamic Tension."

Perhaps it's the name “Dynamic Tension” that has everyone confused. Many of the old-time strongman used isometrics in their training programs as well as body weight exercises and free weights.

Atlas did have training in isometrics; he applied many of the isometric contractions that were advocated by Alois P. Swoboda.

At one time Charles Atlas was quoted as saying that… "He had ordered the Swoboda course.

The fact that Charles Atlas used applied isometrics increase saving his physique irrefutable that Atlas used and applied isometrics in creating his physique.

So while perhaps the misconception about Charles Atlas Isometrics is not entirely true is true enough that he had a complete understanding of the use of isometric exercise in the building of strength and muscular size.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that the Charles Atlas course used isometrics at all. They didn't. Those photos that appear to be isometric excercises actually involve one set of muscles being used against the other through a range of motion, not statically. Charles Atlas himself demonstrated them on film which you can see clips of on youtube, and the folks at Charles Atlas Ltd. also confirmed this to me years ago. They were NOT isometrics, but rather isotonic tension pushing and pulling through a range of motion. It's easy to get confused looking at still photographs.
